Scripture: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, Genesis 32:22-28

Jabez’ name meant “I gave birth to him in pain”. The name was imposed on him by his mother due to the circumstances surrounding his birth. Truly to the name, Jabez’ life was characterized by pain. What a lesson to learn about the power of our words. What you say about yourself (positive or negative), or what other people declare about you may come to pass before you realize it. Such was the case with Jabez. But one day, Jabez decided enough is enough. He could no longer take it anymore. He had had enough of pain and he cried unto God desperately for help. The result? He became more honorable than his brothers.

Jacob also came to mind. His name meant deceiver - Genesis 27:36. His name also hunted him as his life was filled with deceit. One day, Jacob had an encounter with the Angel of the Lord. He saw a divine opportunity to transform his life and wrestled with the Angel all night until his name was changed to Israel - the one who struggles with God and prevails.

Circumstances surrounding some of us have led us to our present situation. Have you noticed a pattern that is contrary to the will of God in your life? Do you seem to lack the true peace of God? The truth of the matter is if you will get desperate enough to seek God’s face this day with all your heart, and ask Him for a change, you will have your heart desires fulfilled. When you are desperate, you won’t need to be talked into fasting, praying or living in obedience. You just do it because there is no other option. When you get to this point in your life, rest assured that the Lord will show up in your situation. He will change your name. I mean from a sinner to a saint, looser to a winner, nobody to somebody, failure to success, mediocre to an achiever, homeless to a landlord, borrower to a lender, and debtor to a creditor. You are created for greater things and cannot afford to continue to struggle forever. It is well.

Instruction: Take some time to worship the living God for His ability to change any situation.

  • Father, let your hand be with me in Jesus’ name (Ezra 7:6, 8:18, Nehemiah 2:8 Acts11:21).

  • From this day forward, the wealth on the seas will be brought to me, and to me the riches of the nations will come in Jesus’ name (Isaiah 60:5).

  • Heavenly Father, Let your glory shine upon me from henceforth in Jesus’ name (Isaiah 60:1).

  • Since my light has come, I will shine from this day forward and darkness will not be able to comprehend my light.

Thank the Lord for answering your prayers. Amen.
